tiny letters to the universe
Here we are, a new day (and a new venture into the substack newsletter world) dawning. I’m sitting at my desk, pondering what to write. I’ve never been good at spreading the word about what I’m working on at any given time—I’ve always been more secretive about my creative endeavors and rarely (if ever) post about them. I could go into the reasons why I’ve shied away from being public-facing with my words and art, but I think I’ll save that post for later. For now, I’m going to break out of my comfort zone a little starting here, in these tiny letters to the universe.
This first letter will be about intent—that is, what I aim to share in these magically-delivered letters to you.
This definition of ‘intent’ is from Merriam-Webster.com:
Intent (noun): a usually clearly formulated or planned intention: AIM.
I’m glad the word ‘usually’ is in there, because this allows for ‘maybe not entirely clearly formulated’ intentions to exist. My somewhat-clearly formulated intention with these newsletters is this: to share openly the crafty projects I’m working on as well as writerly stuff currently taking up space in my mind. My hope is to spark your interest in exploring new and varied methods of creating, whether it be physical things (painting, linocut art, sculpture, etc) or building new literary worlds.
In future posts, I’ll go into my writing process and share craft exercises, along with updates and process photos for whatever non-writing project I’m working on in the moment.
Here are a few examples of non-writing projects that could make appearances in future newsletters:
Stamp carvings - For the past few weeks I’ve been carving a series of Ghibli stamps to use on handwritten letters to friends. I’ll have non-Ghibli stamps to show, too.
Linocut art - I’m really loving making limited edition prints at the moment and will happily share the process of hand-printing with ink, brayer, and paper.
Solo RPG game updates - I’ve been writing a solo RPG (role-playing game) similar to the solo RPG journaling game Thousand Year Old Vampire by Tim Hutchings, but set in a Ghibli-esque world. I also have a smaller solo RPG in the works about exploration and the vastness of space. Details and updates about these projects will be shared soon.
Custom keycaps - I love mechanical keyboards and will be venturing into the world of customizing keycaps out of polymer clay and resin. We’ll see how this new craft project goes…
Stationery supplies - New inks & fountain pens & washi tapes & more. I’ll share photos/recs of stationery supplies that have stolen my heart.
Sewing projects - Some of the sewing projects I take on are for clients and can’t be shared until they are made public, but I will share non-client sewing projects/costume process photos, on occasion.
Recipes - Why not get creative in the kitchen, too?
Teas - They fuel me, after all.
If there are things you’d like to see more of, let me know. This space is a work in progress, and I’m grateful to have you alongside me on this journey.
Thank you for spending a bit of your time with me <3
